Recent economic data offers an interesting glimpse into where Canada’s economy and household wealth stand today and what it may mean for Calgary homeowners. According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the average household net worth across the country has reached about $1.07 million. Of course, this number varies significantly depending on factors such as age, province, and how households build their wealth.
In Alberta, for example, the average household net worth is around $1.01 million, reflecting a different mix of real estate and financial assets compared to higher-priced markets such as Ontario and British Columbia.
One of the key takeaways from the report is that real estate continues to represent the largest component of household wealth for many Canadians, accounting for roughly 54% of total net worth on average. For younger households in particular, housing equity often represents their single largest asset.
Separate economic commentary from Signal 49 Research (formerly the Conference Board of Canada) also suggests the broader economy may face some challenges in 2026. Recent reports indicate that Canada’s merchandise exports fell by 4.7% in January, marking the largest decline since April 2025. The labour market has also softened somewhat, with employment declining and the national unemployment rate rising to 6.7%.
These developments don’t necessarily signal an economic downturn, but they do serve as a reminder that economic conditions are still uncertain. Periods like this can be a good opportunity for households to review their overall financial situation, not just monthly expenses, but the full picture of assets and liabilities.
For many homeowners in Calgary, real estate represents a significant portion of household wealth; understanding how your home fits into your overall financial picture can be very helpful. To make that easier, I’ve created a simple one-page “Net Worth Snapshot” worksheet that homeowners can use to estimate their total financial position. If you’d like a copy of the worksheet, feel free to reach out and I’d be happy to send it to you.
Many people are surprised at what they discover after taking just a few minutes to add up their assets, debts, and home equity.
If you’d like help estimating your home’s current market value as part of that process, I’m always happy to assist.
